Indians in School Textbooks
During class, I read pages from a history textbook written in 1887, and searched for description of savagery within the textbook. According to Google, a savage is "a member of a people regarded as primitive and uncivilized." As I read how Indians were viewed in this time period, I was astonished to see how bad they were treated and how they were described as murderes, and people you would disrespect. It gave no motive to why the Indian's were there, their actual culture, and their ways of life. If I was reading this textbook in this time period, I would shape my thoughts of Indians around the description of people who did not deserve to live in America and be treated with equality. They were described as people who thought war was the answer to everything, and they did not have a clear understanding of what was going on. The Indians had their land taken away from them, and in return they were judged upon what the white man told everyone else, thus having a bad reputation.

Newspaper Exibits
- What is a newspaper? (Find a definition)
A regularly issued publication that includes current local or national news, and advertising.
- When and where did newspapers first come into existence?
1566, in cities like Venice
1605 in the Holy Roman Empire
3. What were some of the very oldest newspapers in the United States?
The New York Post
The Inquirer
- Find a newspaper being published today. You may find a paper copy of a paper (such as Sunday edition of the local paper) or a USA Today, or you may read a digital copy of a newspaper. Try finding one for a major American city. See what news is receiving attention. What are the “leading stories”?
Clinton-Sanders debate
Turkey Buries Its Dead Amid Turmoil Over Terrorist Attack
Water Fines in California
- Which does it mean to be the “newspaper of record”? What US newspaper was first designated as the nation’s newspaper of record in 1913? What other US paper can be considered a newspaper of record? The newspaper of record was the publicly available newspaper, approved to sell by the government. The first US newspaper of record was The New York Times. The Times could be a newspaper of record.
- Think about it: How is looking at a newspaper different from our use of social media to stay connected?
The newspaper is fact based, but social media is more of an opinion based society. The newspaper is based off of factual evidence, but social media has no credibility. We see the newspaper being published, and are assured of the truth. Social media leads to harmful untrue rumors more about the personal life. Newspapers create meaningful reports letting the world know what’s going on, and were and still are very important to the world.

Deep Thinking
"Our use of social media for news is selective and intentional so that we may tend to remain interested only in things we are already interested in. On the other hand, professional news outlets, like newspapers, expose readers to information on a broad range of topics. This helps me to see what other people are interested in or think is important."
The Vancouver Independent previews the policy on Indians and a War in western Idaho where many troops were killed. The Indians tortured not only troops, but also the troops family members by cutting off a wife's legs, and killing their family. The people of Southern Idaho want a new Indian policy, and the current one is not sufficient enough.
The Vancouver independent., June 21, 1877,
Today is June 21, 1877, a rather stifling day. The 4th of July is approaching, and I plan to attend a celebration in the North Fork of Lewis River. I should have a grand time between all of the dances, and the vocal performances. I bought a some new English and French cloth's superintended by a first class cutter from Fishel and Roberts, and a new saddle from J.J. Winter for bullet. When I came home, I could not find my pocket book. I lost a whole four hundred dollars between here and there.
I do not know what this world is coming to. Indians are attacking innocent men, women, and children on the Salmon River, and no troops were even ordered. I do not know how and why these events are occurring, and how the government keeps covering themselves under the Indian Policy. This so called, Quaker Plan, is a fraud. The government seems to believe that they can create fine, christian, reborn Indians. What they do not know is that this is a fantasy that the Indians are winning. We give them rifles and religion, when all they do for us is turn against the American people. The government has stooped down to their level, and they need to realize what is more important: saving a thousand men, or trying to civilize the Indians. For now, I'm trying to stay out of this war and mind my own business, because the harvesting of my potatoes are almost ready. This year I planted the sprouts and they are supposed to sprout better and earlier. I am hopeful not only in my farm, but the community and the future of the United States.

US History-Review and Reflect
During the first quarter of US history, I have reviewed my knowledge of early American history, and then built upon my current knowledge of the civil war. I have grown to be a more complex thinker in analyzing culture, slavery, and the black codes. My area of strength is writing essay’s, because it shows that I fully understand the concepts, and areas of study. In my essays, I have learned to do proper research along with paraphrasing, identifying high quality sources, and hyperlinking. Being able to analyze Twelve Years a Slave and Glory(1989), I was able to grow as a student in the types of knowledge that I build upon. I need to improve on finding high quality sources to use in my essay’s.
My goals for the future in this class are to fully get a grasp on what America was like after the civil war, and how they were able to recoup. History really helps us understand the mistakes that are made in the past, what to do, and what not to do, in the future. I would love to learn about the government system in our future classes, and talk about current politics, as that is what I’m very interested in.
