3. Poster 1- This poser shows how the US was not eager to join the war, and that everyone needs to realize that The United States needs to fight back. While looking at this poster, I see a women wearing an American flag sleeping on a fancy chair. She is holding some type of document. It makes me feel like America is lazy, and needs to "Wake Up."

    Poster 2- This poster is porting Germany as a large animal that has just killed a women. It is trying to persuade you to join the US Army. It is on our soil. It is trying to scare Americans into wanting to fight back, and not letting Germany walk all over us.

    Poster 3- This poster is trying to persuade you that "Liberty bonds" help you beat Germany (shown as a barbaric- warlike creature) and support the American soldiers. The creature in shown with bloody fingers looking across a sea. (Maybe the Atlantic.) The "German" looks ready to kill. Maybe for people that can not go to war, this is their opportunity to help.

4. I do not think that the US government should spend money on posters to try and get people to join the war. They should be using that money in the war. If the people aren't notified of what is going on, how will the people join the army over a poster? They really need to keep the world informed without people finding out about the war situation through posters.

5. I believe that the government had to because communication was slim. They had to scare people into believing that the war was coming, and they do not need to wait to take action.

Progressivism influenced innovations to the extent to create higher standard for society. Some examples included creating a healthier lifestyle, finding new ways of transportation, and being able to protect yourself from modern issues. All of these ideas were strategies during the progressive era, and were beneficial to people, businesses, and the government.

-Intro-

During the Progressive Era masshealth regulations along with recognition of the benefits of a healthier lifestyle lead to a more informed society that was more conscious of their personal hygiene. The innovation of the Gillette Razor helped lead men to create a better standpoint of personal hygiene, while women were looking up to Annie Oakley as a role model for women’s health and respect of their bodies. The Influenza pandemic of 1918 lead to an overhaul of health regulations that would help increase the quality of life of everyday citizens, men or women.

-Conclusion-

Had it not been for the quick thinking and influential figures of the time period like Annie Oakley and King Camp Gillette the importance of personal hygiene would not have been so widely accepted. These steps towards betterment of health made the mass reformation of health regulations, after the “Spanish Flu” pandemic more widely accepted and easier to enforce. Had Progressivism not taken such drastic measures to change the way American’s live, would we still be living in third-world conditions?

Progressivism Blog Post

            As I went through the Newspaper archives, I came along the topic of Annie Oakley. Even though I thought I had great interest in this subject, I was prompted with the question of how to relate this to Progressivism. Yes, Annie Oakley was a public figure in entertainment, but did she contribute to any aspects of women in the era? After I read the summary of Oakley's journey, I started looking through newspaper articles about her. I found many areas of her out-shooting the opposite gender and being blamed for stealing something from an African American man (which she actually did not do.) If she was so influential in this era, why didn't I see any of the reforms that she had made or the progress she made with women's rights?

             Women were not given many opportunities during this era. Annie Oakley have hope to women that they could do what they wanted to do and not be subjected to stereotypes. She influenced women to take care of their body, and be happy with who they were. In one newspaper article Annie Oakley stated, "Women can shoot as well as men." This showed me that she had confidence and the willingness to succeed. It also showed how influential she was when she taught other women how to shoot.

            On the other hand, she was only a public figure. Because she was a women and did things that men would usually do, it was attractive to a broader audience. She did not do anything to benefit the world, she only brought the sense of The Wild West show to the eyes of women. Oakley herself did not make big changes in the world to benefit for progressivism and the way society works. I came along an article about how she died: normally. This shows that she was just a normal person who knew how to shoot. She may have been a role model for other people, and made it socially acceptable to do a man's sport, but she made a very tiny dent in the progress of women's rights and the progressive era.

Self-Reflection

       During the second semester start, we have studied Imperialism, and Progressivism. I have gained a good understanding of each of these subjects through research, analyzing movies, and having a more critical thinking based set of reading questions. Through my research, I have gained confidence and the skills to conduct a solid analytical background. During our Imperialism Chapter, studying political cartoons were my forte. They helped me gain a sense of what it was like during that time. Watching and analyzing the documentary about Eddie Aikau really helped me get a sense of the Hawaiian identity and how other countries felt about being involved with America. The beginning of our approach to progressivism has really interested me. I enjoy seeing people from 1890-1920 have a sense of innovation and how they developed each individual idea to benefit our country.
